What is the Parents Role in the College Process?

Be a Support System

Yes, believe it, your child is heading off to college! As parents, it is common to reflect on the childhood years including your involvement at their schools and activities outside the classroom. As your child gets older, you can learn to nurture your relationship with your child in different ways… always loving and supportive but not quite as involved.

This is especially true during the college prep and admissions process. Your temptation to remain equally involved as in your child’s earlier years is common. However, allowing your child to conduct the college process independently is best so your child can:

  • Establish their independence
  • Feel confident about their decisions
  • Prepare to be self-sufficient when they go to college

This is your child’s time to identify what matters and make important decisions with your care. We advise parents to be supportive but not take over the whole process.

“For some students, the college selection process has become so complex and the increasing use of technology so daunting, that they feel additional assistance is warranted. An increasing number of students and their parents have turned to resources outside the school environment to aid them in their search for appropriate colleges and universities and admissions counseling information.”

Things not to do:

  • Do not make your child’s college process your job.
  • Do not limit college options or impose your beliefs
    about what college should be.
  • Do not write or change essays. Admissions officers
know when parents write essays and the result can
    be a college rejection!
  • Do not file your financial forms without a college
    financial advisor’s review.

Things to do:

  • Assist your child with scheduling and organization.
  • Encourage your child to research and explore college options that may be a good match.
  • Discuss college essays. Essays are often personal
and it is best for students to work with their college counselor on topics, grammar and writing styles.
  • Work with a college financial advisor to maximize
your aid and file financial forms with confidence.
